How MEM Actually Works

Simple, private, and surprisingly gentle — here is what happens in a Mace Energy Method session and why it works differently from anything you may have tried before.

Your Feelings Are the Starting Point — Not Your Story

Most therapeutic approaches ask you to talk. To describe what happened, why it hurt, and how it made you feel. The assumption is that understanding your past through conversation will release its grip on your present. Many people find this approach exhausting, retraumatising, or simply ineffective after years of effort.

MEM works differently. It uses the presence of unwanted feelings as a navigational tool — not as a subject for discussion. When you focus your attention on a difficult area of your life, an unwanted feeling naturally arises. MEM uses that feeling as a signal, a kind of compass pointing toward the energetic pattern underneath. From there, guided mental exercises — completely silent, completely private — do the work of dissolving that pattern.

You don't need to explain anything. You don't relive the past. You simply follow the guidance of your practitioner through a series of gentle, internal exercises. That's all.


What Happens Step by Step

Identifying the focus area

Together we identify the area of life you want to address — anxiety, a relationship pattern, low confidence, a recurring fear, or anything that feels stuck. You don't need to explain the full story behind it.

Noticing the feeling

Your practitioner guides you to gently place your attention on the issue. Whatever feeling naturally arises is noted — not analysed, not discussed. It simply serves as a reference point for the work to follow.

Guided mental exercises

Using simple, unvoiced mental exercises, you work with the feeling energetically. No speaking is required from you. Your practitioner guides you quietly through each step of the procedure.

Shift and release

Most people notice a tangible shift during the session — a lightening, a sense of distance from the issue, or simply feeling different about something that previously felt very heavy. This is the energetic pattern releasing.

Checking in and closing

We gently review what shifted and ensure you feel grounded and well before closing the session. You are in control throughout, and sessions move only as fast as you are comfortable with.

MEM Is Not Self-Help

As John Mace explains, drawing on an insight from psychologist Leslie Weatherhead: when you look at yourself, you use part of yourself to do the looking. That means you are never seeing the whole picture.

A licensed MEM practitioner provides the external perspective and guided structure that makes the method work. Think of it less like reading a self-help book and more like working with a skilled guide — one who knows the terrain and can see things you simply cannot see from the inside.

MEM does not cure conditions — but it can help you change, feel lighter, and live with greater freedom. The one condition: you need to be willing to change.
