Understanding MEM
What exactly is the Mace Energy Method?
The Mace Energy Method (MEM) is a therapeutic approach developed by John Mace over more than 50 years. It works with the energetic dimension of emotions to dissolve the patterns behind unwanted feelings and behaviours — without requiring you to talk about your personal history or relive past experiences. It is guided by a licensed practitioner using simple, silent mental exercises.
Do I have to talk about what happened to me?
No. This is one of the most distinctive features of MEM. You are never required to share personal details, describe past events, or discuss your relationships or history. The method works entirely without this information. Many clients find this to be one of the greatest reliefs about the process.
Will I have to relive painful memories?
No. MEM does not ask you to return to traumatic or distressing moments in your past. You remain in the present throughout the session. The energetic charge of old experiences is addressed without requiring you to re-enter them. This makes MEM particularly accessible for people who have found other therapies difficult or retraumatising.
Is MEM a form of counselling or psychotherapy?
MEM is commonly classified as a complementary therapy, but it does not fall under the banner of counselling or psychotherapy in the traditional sense. There is no discussion of problems, no advice given, and no analysis of your past. It is a distinct method with its own principles and procedures, grounded in the philosophy of Causism.
Can I do MEM on my own without a practitioner?
No. MEM requires a licensed practitioner and cannot be applied as a self-help technique. This is not a limitation of the method — it is a feature of how it works. As the founder John Mace explains, we cannot observe our own mental processes objectively because we use part of ourselves to do the observing. A practitioner provides the external guidance that makes the method effective.
What to Expect
Practical Questions
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person and issue to issue. Many clients experience meaningful and lasting change after just one or two sessions. Other areas may benefit from additional work. We do not prescribe a set number of sessions in advance — we let your progress guide us and always move at a pace that feels right for you.
How long does a session last?
A first session typically runs between 60 and 90 minutes, as we take time to orient you to the process and establish a comfortable working relationship. Subsequent sessions are often shorter. We ensure every session closes with you feeling grounded and well before you leave.
Can sessions be done online?
Yes. MEM sessions are just as effective conducted via video call as they are in person. Many of our clients access sessions online from different parts of Australia and around the world. All you need is a reliable internet connection, a quiet private space, and somewhere comfortable to sit.
What will I feel like after a session?
Most people feel lighter, calmer, or simply different about the issue that was addressed. Some notice a shift immediately during the session; others find changes continue to emerge in the days that follow. There is nothing you need to do after a session — just go about your life and notice what feels different.
Is MEM safe?
Yes. MEM is a gentle, non-invasive method. Because you do not revisit traumatic material directly, there is no risk of retraumatisation. The process moves only as fast as you are comfortable with, and you remain in control throughout. As with any therapeutic work, we recommend discussing any significant mental health diagnoses or medications with your treating doctor as well.

Can MEM cure my condition?
MEM does not claim to cure any condition. What it can do — and what thousands of people have experienced — is help you feel significantly better, release emotional burdens, and change patterns that have been holding you back. The distinction matters: we are not treating a diagnosis, we are supporting you as a whole person to live with greater freedom and well-being.
What if I've tried therapy before and it hasn't worked?
MEM is often described by clients as effective precisely for people who have tried other approaches without lasting success. Because it works differently — at an energetic rather than cognitive or narrative level — it can reach patterns that other methods have not. Many clients come to MEM as a last resort and find it to be the most effective thing they have tried.
Does MEM work for everyone?
The one condition for MEM to work is that the person is genuinely willing to change. If you are open to the possibility that something can shift — even if you are sceptical, even if you have been disappointed before — MEM can work. It is not a passive process; your willingness and engagement matter. But it asks nothing beyond that.
How do I know you are a genuine MEM practitioner?
